Dr. Roy is a Professor of Medicine at Cooper Medical School of Rowan University. In addition to being the Outpatient Primary Care Teaching Faculty of the Internal Medicine Residency Program and the Director of the Residency Research Program, he is also the Medical School Internal Medicine – Primary Care Co-Course Director. 

Dr. Roy received his Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBBS) degree from the Sarojini Naidu Medical College of Agra University, India in 1990. He was awarded with many certificates of merit in several subjects. Based on his outstanding performance he was awarded with the National Merit Scholarship of India as well. In 1993, he received a Doctorate in Medicine (MD) degree from the Sarojini Naidu Medical College of Agra University, India for completion of a residency in medicine. Subsequently, he was selected as a post-doctorate Chief Resident in the Postgraduate Department of Medicine in the same institution. By that time Dr. Roy had published several original research articles, book chapters, abstracts and made several presentations at the state and national medical societies in India. During 1995-96 he worked as a Chief Medical Officer in the Emergency Department of the prestigious All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, India. In 1996, he moved to the United States and joined a residency in Internal Medicine in the Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center – Albert Einstein College of Medicine, New York. After completion of his residency he was selected as the Chief Resident of the Internal Medicine Residency Program. He was awarded with the plaque of leadership for excellence as a Chief Resident. In 1999, he was selected as a Fellow in the Department of Gastroenterology in the Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center – Albert Einstein College of Medicine, New York. During his training period in this institution, Dr. Roy published and presented several abstracts in regional and national medical conferences, and worked as a Clinical Medicine Instructor for the undergraduate medical students at the Yeshiva University Medical School - Albert Einstein College of Medicine, New York. Based on his clinical accomplishments, teaching excellence and scholarly achievements, in 2003 he was awarded with the Fellowship of the American College of Physicians (FACP).

 

Dr. Roy joined an Internal Medicine – Primary Care practice in New Jersey and continued his hospital affiliations as a teaching attending in several residency programs in New Jersey, such as Union Hospital, Newark Beth Israel Hospital Center, Saint Barnabas Medical Center, Robert Wood Johnson Medical School - University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, and Cooper Medical School of Rowan University (CMSRU). He is a recipient of numerous national Press Ganey Awards for many years, which were voted by his patients for being a “Physician who made a positive difference” in their lives. Since 1994 through present he had been a teacher, preceptor and research mentor to many medical students, residents and international postgraduates throughout many healthcare systems and several medical schools, both in India and in the United States. He has presented several lectures, and created academic development opportunities for the medical students and residents. His patients have awarded him with the recognition of Top Doctor year after year for more than a decade due to his excellent clinical acumen and patient care. His residents have awarded him with the Award for Excellence in Teaching for many years. For many years, he has been continuing to serve as a Judge of the Camden Scholars Forum of CMSRU, a Member of the Resident Research Panel, the Director of the Internal Medicine Residency Research Program, Member of the Research Committee at the CMSRU, a Member of the CMSRU Nominations and Elections Committee, and the Co-Course Director of the Internal Medicine-Primary Care at CMSRU.

 

Dr. Roy always had a strong interest in academia since his Postgraduate Doctorate of Medicine degree in India in 1993. He enjoys teaching medical students and residents. He has made enormous research contributions throughout his career. He has published and presented more than 400 scientific papers which include original articles, invited articles, perspectives, abstracts and posters in various regional, national and international conferences and peer-reviewed medical journals. As an attending physician, he has been awarded with multiple teaching attending and research mentor awards, such as the "Vijay Rajput MD Award for Excellence in Teaching Award", "Richard P. Dellinger MD Research Mentor of the Year Award", and "Best Teaching Attending of the Year Award", just to name a few. He has also been recognized as the "Top Doctor" by the Philadelphia Magazine, South Jersey Magazine, and Jersey's Best Magazine on multiple times over the last fifteen years based on the Castle Connolly National survey of patients and medical professional.

 

Additionally, Dr. Roy has earned national recognition through his extensive work in the field of Medical Humanities. His contributions in the Journal of Internal Medicine, Annals of Internal Medicine, American Medical Association Journal of Ethics, Fleisher Art Memorial - Arts & Medicine symposium in Philadelphia, and National Academy of Medicine are some of his many notable contributions. Some of his work has been requested by other national organizations for display in their clinics and websites as patient education material. One of his contribution has been translated into Italian language for publication in a book form. In 2018, Dr. Roy was invited by the National Academy of Medicine, Washington, DC to showcase his work in the Medical Humanities section for permanent online display of only a few selected contributions out of many that were received from worldwide. In 2019, he was invited by the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire (UWEC) Ruth Foster Gallery sponsored by the Foster Gallery and the Institute for Health Sciences to display his work which explores the intersection of health and the arts from different perspectives, including health and healing as represented in art and art as a form of healing. At the national level, he is a reviewer of three reputed medical journals. He also serves as a peer reviewer in one international medical journal, and he has been actively involved as associate editor of one regional medical journal. Dr. Roy conducted and published a randomized controlled study of Vitamin D3 supplementation to prevent respiratory tract infections, especially SARS CoV2 infection, in hospital workers, for which the study team received a financial grant of $192,000.00 from The Won Sook Chung Foundation. Based on his excellent patient care delivery, exemplary clinical accomplishments, mentorship to the next generation of physicians, leadership in the field of Medicine, teaching excellence, and enormous contribution in medical research, in 2024, Dr. Roy was awarded with the Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians, Edinburgh (FRCP Edin).

 

Dr. Roy’s main specialty interests are primary care, preventive medicine, medical humanities, medical research and medical education.
