About Sashko Damjanovski

Dr. Sashko Damjanovski is an associate professor in the Department of Biology, Western University, and an associate scientist at the Children's Health Research Institute (CHRI).

The Damjanovski lab uses frog development and cultured cells to investigate secreted enzymes and how they regulate cell migration, invasion and cell-cell interactions. These enzymes (MMPs) and their inhibitors (TIMPs and RECK), which play crucial roles in many developmental processes, are often unregulated in diseases such as cancer. We use a number of embryonic and molecular techniques to understand how embryonic regulation is lost during disease.  The lab utilizes a number of embryological tools including fluorescent dissecting and compound microscopes, as well as micro-injectors. Additionally we utilize a myriad of resources and equipment that is common to most labs that undertake molecular biology experiments, and those specific to MMP studies (zymography, invasion assays and 3D cell culture).  While we have much of our own equipment, many large items and imaging equipment are part of core shared facilities (MGU core, MoBEEs, Biotron).

Research Overview: Xenopus development; Extracellular Matrix (ECM); ECM remodeling by MMPS; MMP/TIMP interactions; TIMP cell-signaling events
