Abstract
The aim of this paper is to produce a synopsis of the conventional concept of metonymy and, by studying its cognitive aspects, shed light on aspects of defining, categorising and analysing properties of metonymy. In fact, we seek to draw the readers' attention to the different ways of defining metonymy from traditional and cognitive perspectives. We will also study the most important types of metonymy and present methods of analysing and treating it using different tools of traditional and cognitive conceptions. We attempt to differentiate between metonymy's properties in each conception. We also seek to highlight metonymy's relation with other semantic phenomena such as polysemy and the treatment of metonymy in other research disciplines, like discourse analysis. We also aim to draw a critical view of metonymy's status in cognitive linguistics.
