Global Imbalances and Global Aggregate Demand
International Trade and Finance Association (2016)
  • Robert C. Shelburne
Powerpoint of presentation for the opening plenary session of the annual meeting of the International Trade and Finance Association in Los Angeles, California on May 23, 2016. The presentation argues that in addition to the inequality increasing effects of US trade policy, US trade deficits since 2008 have also created significant increases in unemployment. The macroeconomic effects of trade imbalances are considerably different when the global economy is experiencing a deficiency in global aggregate demand, especially when the international reserve economy is in a liquidity trap.
