The study assesses the possibility of implementing the AERMOD modeling system on Polish territory. Attention was drawn to the availability and the quality of meteorological and spatial data required for impact assessment of the emission sources on air quality. The potentiality of application of individual modeling system tools was discussed and the alternative data preparation methods were defined. The effects of application of the modeling system were exemplified by air quality impact assessment conducted for the existing facility – Sewage Sludge Incineration (SSI) Plant in Lodz – with different sources of meteorological data assumed. Discussion of the analysis results points to consequences associated with the implementation of meteorological data from the measurement sites located within a considerably large distance from the emission source. Based on the analysis, it was found that despite certain difficulties related with the input data preparation, the AERMOD modeling system can be successfully implemented in Polish conditions for air quality impact assessment of i.a. point emission sources. Additionally, the problem of inadequate quality of meteorological data was addressed and a possible solution was presented with the use of prognostic meteorological models and CALMET diagnostic model.
