Heroes and Hebrews: The Priest in the Promised Land
American Ethnologist
(1979)
Abstract
That the literature of the Old Testament provides fertile ground for structural analysis is well known. Leach (1969), Douglas (1966), Andriolo (1973), and Carroll (1977) have all labored in this vineyard with excellent results. But they have for the most part examined data not commonly thought to be directly affected by the vagaries of historical circumstance. The primary objective of this paper is to demonstrate that at least one narrative presentation of seemingly historical materials in the Old Testament, the life of Moses, may also be profitably studied through the structuralist method.
