About Robert P. Smith

I received my Ph. D. in Biology from Carleton University in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Under the guidance of Dr. Myron Smith, I predominantly investigated the mechanism of un-24 mediated nonself recognition from Neurospora crassa. I was also an active member and coordinator of the Let’s Talk Science Partnership Program. I received a Canadian Graduate Scholarship, a Young Ambassador of Science Award and was named a Graduate Student Ambassador.

After graduation, I was a Post-Doctoral associate at Duke University. Under the guidance of Dr. Lingchong You, I used a combination of systems biology and synthetic biology to investigate mechanisms of antibiotics resistance and the spread of invasive species. Furthermore, I was a Duke Scholar in Infectious Disease, where was exposed to the clinical side of infectious diseases, including their pathogenesis, diagnoses and treatment.

Outside of research, I am actively involved in STEM outreach activities with K-12 students. Here, I was recognized as an Outstanding Volunteer in a Health Research Program.
