Abstract
For decades, ecologists have strived to elucidate the causes of high species diversity in tropical regions. In his Perspective, Marquis discusses the results of a recent field study in the Peruvian Amazon ( Fine et al.) that clearly demonstrates how herbivorous predators, such as insects, influence tropical forest diversity by reinforcing specialization of plant species to different soil habitats.
