Abstract
Transitioning from clinical practice to family medicine academic medicine can be a challenge even for the most skilled clinician. There is not a significant amount of research-oriented projects based on PubMed review that has been completed regarding best practices in this topic. We will share personal experience regarding this transition from civilian practice within the military setting to academics. We will review the current definition of academic medicine and clinical practice. We will explore the transition of a physician in clinical practice into the academic space and make consideration of the necessary preparations for transition of practice. We will discuss the challenges that are currently appreciated in the on boarding processes of clinicians into the roles as a new faculty. Review of best practice processes will be considered based on review of existing literature and review of other inter-professional organizations and how they are managing these transitions will be considered. At the end of this seminar we hope to provide some recommendations for participants to take back to their academic facilities to promote success of these clinicians that are considering and have already made this leap into academia by list of common topics/areas for skill development that range from teaching and research skills to how to manage your calendar and avoid common pitfalls of over commitment in early years. We will end the session with sharing experience among participants.
