About Rob Swanson

Dr. Robert J. Swansons’ research focus concerns understanding the molecular details of plant fertilization, and how these details can evolve over time. From 2005-2010, Dr. Swanson took part in a multi institutional research project funded by the National Science Foundation Arabidopsis 2010 program aimed at elucidating the genetic recipe for constructing a pollen grain. More recently, with support from the National Science Foundation, Dr. Swanson has focused attention on the genetic basis for nonrandom mating in plants.
Dr. Swansons' research program incorporates and depends on the work of dedicated undergraduate researchers. Since coming to Valparaiso University, Dr. Swanson has mentored nearly 20 undergraduates in research, and has received the Valparaiso University Office of Multicultural programs “Mentor of the Year” award. Most of students that Dr. Swanson has mentored have gone on to graduate work in biology and related fields.
