About Rick Block

Rick Block is Metadata Librarian at Seattle University. He is also the liaison librarian for Asian Studies, International Studies, Nonprofit Leadership, Political Science, Public Administration and Public Affairs. Rick was previously Head of Special Collections Metadata and Cataloging at Columbia University. Rick has also worked at Auburn University, Brandeis University, Marquette University, Boston College, Tufts University, and The Metropolitan Museum of Art.  Rick won the 2008 Library Journal Teaching Award. He also won the first annual Adjunct Faculty Recognition Award at Long Island University in 2007. He has served as an adjunct faculty member for the Palmer School of Library and Information Science at Long Island University, The Pratt Institute School of Information, and the University of Hawaii at Manoa Department of Library and Information Science. Rick edits a column for The Serials Librarian titled Voices of the Future. This column publishes papers submitted as part of library school courses that professors recommend for publication.  Rick is a past chair of the ALA/ALCTS Commercial Technical Services Committee, and the Cataloging and Classification Section Committee on Education, Training and Recruitment for Cataloging. He is also a Past President of New England Technical Services Librarians. Rick has spoken widely on various topics including New Horizons for the Middle Manager, Resource Description and Access, and Recruiting for the Next Generation of Librarians. Rick also consults on technical services workflow, and provides training and workshops on cataloging and Library of Congress Classification. He has also served on eight external review panels for the ALA Office for Accreditation. In addition, Rick served on three Year Seven Evaluation Committees for the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities. Rick was promoted to the rank of Librarian in 2015.
