Abstract

A multitrait-multimethod (MTMM) analysis of alienation was conducted by using two personality constructs conceptually relevant to alienation, hostility and locus of control. Subjects were 104 university undergraduates. MTMM analysis indicated that eight of 15 convergent validity coefficients were statistically significant; however, they were all small in magnitude and the majority of the tests of discriminant validity using the Campbell-Fiske criteria were not satisfied. These results indicate the presence of extensive method variance in the observed correlations. The study, therefore, did not provide validational evidence supportive of the alienation construct.
