Abstract

This study examines Byrne's revised repression-sensitization scale (R-S), the Problems Situation Test (PST), and explores relationships between the two measures. Both measures were administered to 245 students, 136 males and 110 females. The analyses of variance was non-significant. The minimal relationships between the two defense measures may be due to low PST construct validity. Alternatively, the R-S scale measures response sets related to self and person perceptions. These response sets may represent extroversion-introversion orientations which produce qualitatively different interpersonal experiences. The two scales have different measurement objectives.
