Abstract

Occam's razor for the thematic apperception test. Originally published in Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books, 2003, Vol 48(4), 421-423. Provides a review of the book "A Practical Guide to the Thematic Apperception Test: The TAT in Clinical Practice" by Edward Aronow, Kim Altman Weiss, and Marvin Rezikoff (see record 2001-18283-000). This book presents general chapters on administration, interpretation, and stimulus characteristics followed by separate chapters on research and diversity issues; report preparation is summarized and psychotherapeutic usefulness is described by interpretive protocols. This review examines several general questions: (a) What kinds of information are necessary for TAT training? (b) Is this book a useful addition to the current TAT training repertoire? (c) How does TAT training fit into the contemporary spectrum of assessment instruments?
