Abstract
If you are in Washington during the next several months you might want to stop by the National Portrait Gallery to take in an exhibit scheduled to open last Friday, “Dark Fields of the Republic: Alexander Gardner Photographs, 1859–1872.” The exhibit will take you back to when artists such as Gardner worked magic with the new technology of photography to document the Civil War and western expansion. But the best reason to visit is to see Gardner’s newly restored portrait of President Abraham Lincoln, popularly known as “the cracked-plate portrait.”
