About Richard K. Brow

Dr. Richard Brow received a bachelor’s degree in ceramic engineering and a master’s degree in glass science from Alfred University in 1980 and 1982, respectively. He was awarded a Ph. D. in ceramic science from the Pennsylvania State University in 1985. Dr. Brow was a member of the technical staff in the ceramic development division of Sandia National Labs in Albuquerque, NM, from 1985 through 1997, where he was responsible for developing new glass compositions for a variety of electronic and optoelectronic applications. Dr. Brow joined Missouri S&T (then called the University of Missouri-Rolla) faculty in 1998 as a professor of ceramic engineering and a senior investigator in the Graduate Center for Materials Research. He was named chair of the ceramic engineering department in 2001 and in 2004, he became The founding chair of the new Materials Science and Engineering Department. After finishing his appointment as chair in 2007, he returned to his full-time faculty position, where he teaches undergraduate and graduate courses on glass science and technology, and kinetic processes, and leads his research group of graduate students, undergraduate students, post-docs, and visiting faculty. That said, every now and then, the university has asked him to take on various administrative positions and so he has served as the director of the Center for Biomedical Research, the interim dean of the College of Engineering and Computing (2016-2017), various positions in the Provost Office (2019-2023), and since March 2024, as the Executive Director for Operations of the Kummer Institiute.

Dr. Brow has published over 250 peer-reviewed research papers on the properties, structures, and applications of glasses, and holds 20 US and international patents for specialty glasses used in a variety of applications. He has received a number of awards and recognitions, including the PACE-Schwartzwalder award (1994) as the nation’s outstanding young ceramic engineer, the Gottardi Prize from the International Commission on Glass (1996) for contributions to glass science by a young researcher, the George W. Morey Award (2004) from the American Ceramic Society for "new and original work in glass science and technology," the Presidential Award for Research and Creativity from the University of Missouri (2010), and the NF Mott Award (2016) for "outstanding contributions to the science of non-crystalline solids over many years". He has received several teaching awards from Missouri S&T, was named Curators’ Professor in 2005, and received the Outstanding Educator Award from the American Ceramic Society in 2019. Dr. Brow is a fellow (1997) and distinguished life member (2020) of the American Ceramic Society and a fellow of the Society of Glass Technology (2005). He was elected to the World Academy of Ceramics in 2021, for "advancement of ceramics culture, science, and technology". He has served as President of the American Ceramic Society (2012-13) and was President of the International Congress on Glass (2019)..
