Abstract
Preamble to Leadership: Theory, Trend, and Leadership Characteristics
Much is written about leadership skills, attributes, and styles. One of the earliest approaches in the study of leadership was the trait approach. Qualities such as conscientiousness, original, intelligence, creative, and soon are values that one ascribes to a leader. Dr. Gordon Allport, an academic, psychologist, and scientist, identified almost “18,000 personality relevant terms” (Matthews, Deary, & Whiteman, 2003, p. 3). The behavioral theories in the 1940s to 1950s focused on the behaviors of the leaders instead of their mental, physical or social charateristics (Leadership Central, 2019). The 1960s saw the rise of Contingency Leadership theory that highlighted the notion that there was no single leadership style where each situation is unique and the nature of those being led, the leader, and the tasks facing the group are different (ibid). The 1970s broughtabout Transactional and Transformational Leadership theory. Transactional Leaders give something in return for following them, such as an incentive, promotion, good performance reviews, and so on (Kabeyi, 2018). Whereas, Transformational Leaders are known to inspire and motivate those who follow them to achieve extraordinary outcomes (ibid).
