About Mr. GYASI Razak Mohammed

I am a PhD Candidate in Social Policy at the Department of Sociology and Social Policy and a fellow of the Asia-Pacific Institute of Ageing Studies (APIAS), Lingnan University. I obtained my MPhil and BA (Hons) from the Department of Geography and Rural Development, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST). I hold Adv.Dip.Edu from the College of Education, University of Cape Coast and LTDP from the Teaching and Learning Centre, Lingnan University. My research interest is eclectic and collaborative, broadly covering ageing and health, social policy issues, global health, traditional and integrative medicine, sociology of health and health services research. My PhD research focuses on ageing and health-seeking behaviour in Ghana, supervised by Prof David R Phillips and Prof Roman David. Drawing on pragmatist research paradigm, I seek to interrogate the role of the contemporary political economy, social support networks, and individual-level dynamics and how these work together, and directly or indirectly impact on the subjective health, psychological well-being and healthcare decisions of older adults in sub-Saharan Africa with Ghanaian example. The study involves a 1,200 older persons, 50 years or older in six randomly sampled political and administrative districts in Ghana. The survey is augmented with 69 in-depth interviews across rural-urban spectrum. The findings are expected to provide groundswell contributions to understanding older people’s health and healthcare, and broadly towards ageing and health policy framework and implementation in Ghana and beyond.

I received research grants from the Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA) and the Institute for Research in Africa (IFRA-Nigeria) & the French Embassy in Ghana in 2013. Previously, I held positions in Ghana as Instructor (2013-2015; University of Cape Coast), Research Assistant (2012-2014; KNUST) and Principal Superintendent (2010-2015; Ghana Education Service). I served as the National Vice President and the Chairperson for Welfare Committee of the Graduate Students Association of Ghana (GRASAG) during 2013/2014 academic year. I served in several offices at Lingnan University, including the Vice Chairperson of the Research and Postgraduate Students' Circle ExCom, Student Member on the Teaching, Learning and Information Service (TLIS) Management Board, Student Representative of the Research and Postgraduate Studies Committee (RPSC) for both Faculty of Social Sciences and the Department of Sociology and Social Policy in 2015-2016. I am currently a member of several academic and professional associations, viz. International Association for Traditional and Complementary Medicine (IATCM), American Sociological Association (ASA), Hong Kong Sociological Association (HKSA), Ghana Geographers Association (GGA) and Asia-Pacific Institute of Ageing Studies (APIAS) at Lingnan University. I enjoy very much reading and writing, traveling and seeing new places, listening to music and watching football, but I struggle to play.
