Abstract

Substance abuse is prevalent throughout the nation, affecting people from adolescence into their adult lives. With the focus of prevention science being on understanding of conditions and behaviors that lead to certain outcomes, we have utilized this science to develop a plan of action to target prevention of substance abuse among adolescents. Coupled with statistical data surrounding substance abuse throughout different age groups, we decided to target 12-17 year old adolescents as our primary focus to maximize the effectiveness prevention science can offer. By suggesting multiple impactful areas to direct attention to, we believe there can be a positive impact on the prevention of substance abuse that affects this age group, and can lead to a positive shift in future statistics surrounding substance abuse among all ages if these suggested interventions are sustained.
