About Rebecca Ong

Dr. Ong is a Research Assistant Professor in the Biomass Conversion Research Laboratory and Great Lakes Bioenergy Research Center at Michigan State University and a Research Assistant Professor at Michigan Technological University. She manages the pretreatment service platform for the GLBRC, providing AFEX-pretreated materials for research within the BCRL and GLBRC, and also for external collaborators.

She received two bachelor's degrees, one in Chemical Engineering and one in Biological Sciences: Plant Sciences from Michigan Technological University (Houghton, MI) in 2005. Dr. Ong finished her Ph.D. degree in Chemical Engineering at Michigan State University in 2011, under the supervision of Dr. Bruce Dale.

Dr. Ong's doctoral research focused on multi-scale interactions between lignocellulosic feedstocks and biomass processing, including distribution of agricultural residues across the landscape; differences in lignocellulosic materials and their interactions with AFEX pretreatment conditions and ease of conversion at the classification, species, and component scales; and, at the molecular scale, the relative impact of lignin transgenic modifications on conversion.

Her current research interests include sustainability of lignocellulosic biofuels, biomass characteristics that influence digestibility, and production of co-products from lignocellulosic biomass. In addition to research she enjoys developing scientific graphics and resources that clearly communicate the more complicated concepts of biofuel production.
