About Rajeev Raghavan, MD, M.Ed, FASN

I joined HCA Healthcare as the Program Director for the Internal Medicine program in July 2021.  Though I am new to HCA Healthcare and this program, I have lived in Houston since 2005. I am originally from the great state of Ohio where I completed my undergraduate education at Case Western Reserve University in Chemical Engineering and medical education at The Ohio State University. I arrived in Houston for my post-graduate training in Internal Medicine and Nephrology at the Baylor College of Medicine (BCM). I wasn’t born in Texas, but I sure got here as fast as I could.

I am super passionate about medical education. Prior to joining HCA Healthcare, I was a faculty member at the BCM for 11 years. At BCM, I directed the Renal Pathophysiology course for 10 years and the Nephrology fellowship training program for 6 years. I still maintain an adjunct professor appointment at BCM. In the spirit of lifelong learning, I completed a Masters of Education (M.Ed) in Health Sciences at the University of Houston from 2019 to 2021. Some of my recent accomplishments include induction into the Alpha Omega Alpha Faculty Chapter by the 2019 BCM graduating class, 7-year member of the undergraduate medical curriculum committee, and serving on the ACGME Nephrology Milestones 2.0 committee. I am an active member of the Diversity and Workforce Committee at the American Society of Nephrology. I love educating primary care physicians about kidney disease, and I have been an invited guest lecturer on the national PriMed circuit for several years.

One of my areas of research is in health disparities, particularly on the care of undocumented immigrants with chronic kidney disease. My publications have garnered nationwide interest in this topic and have appeared in journals such as the New England Journal of Medicine and JAMA. Finally, I am a dedicated, caring clinician who enjoys forming a close connection with my patients. My clinical interest lies in treating glomerular diseases, such as lupus nephritis and membranous nephropathy.

My creative outlet is in music and I perform as a cellist with the critically acclaimed Texas Medical Center Orchestra and World Doctor’s Orchestra, even performing at Carnegie Hall in 2013. I have a physician wife, three daughters, and a dog named Oreo. We enjoy traveling, socializing, and just chilling.
