Description

Stormwater collection systems are conventionally constructed to capture and safely convey runoff to control flooding and associated effects such as loss of life and property damage. Storage and exfiltration of the captured water are usually not provided for in the collection systems. An innovative approach to stormwater management incorporates stormwater storage and exfiltration into collection system design. A tracer study to evaluate the performance of a stormwater collection system that was inadvertently installed with enhanced storage and exfiltration characteristics was conducted at Green Meadows, Logan, Utah. The study showed that the system increased the time of concentration of the site, reduced peak runoff to a stormwater treatment basin, and provided significant infiltration. The results imply that design and installation of stormwater collection systems with enhanced storage and exfiltration have the potential to decrease stormwater treatment costs and the land area needed for retention and treatment basins. The presentation will cover an evaluation of the capability and performance of EPA’s SWMM 5.0 model in design of a stormwater collection system with enhanced storage and exfiltration.
