Dr. Piyasiri Wickramasekara, Sri Lankan national, is an international expert in employment, migration and development issues. He was initially on the academic staff of the economics faculty of the University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka. Thereafter, he joined the International Labour Organization (ILO) as a senior economist and served for 25 years. He lastly served as a Senior Migration Specialist in the ILO’s International Migration Branch in Geneva from 2001 to 2010.
He has contributed extensively to the formulation of ILO’s thinking on international labour migration issues, and in the promotion of a rights-based approach to labour migration. He has contributed to several ILO flagship reports and monographs covering a range of issues - governance of labour migration, migration policies, skilled mobility, migration and development, temporary and circular migration, irregular migration and migrant rights.

He is currently Vice President of Global Migration Policy Associates (GMPA), an international NGO of migration experts from different regions. He was a visiting professor in the School of Social and Political Sciences (SSPS), University of Sydney, Australia during 2013/14 and is now affiliated as Honorary Associate, Department of Sociology and Social Policy, SPSS, Sydney University.  Dr. Wickramasekara holds a B.A. in Economics from the University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka, and a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Cambridge.
