About Prof. PHILLIPS David, Rosser

David R Phillips (BScEcon, PhD, Wales) has been Chair Professor of Social Policy at Lingnan University, Hong Kong, since 1997. From 2004 to 2008, he was Academic Dean of Humanities and Social Sciences and Academic Dean of Social Sciences, 2008-2010. He was also Head of the Department of Sociology and Social Policy from 1999 to 2004 and Founder Director of the Asia-Pacific Institute of Ageing Studies (APIAS).

His research and teaching interests are in health, health care and social epidemiology, with particular emphasis on social gerontology in which he focuses on service and long-term care issues related to demographic ageing. He researches widely on issues related to global health, ageing and the environment, health and stress management, work-life balance and quality of life. He established the Asia-Pacific Institute of Ageing Studies at Lingnan in 1997 and was founder Co-ordinator of the Asian Ageing Research Network of the Asian Development Research Forum, which was sponsored by Canada's International Development Research Centre (IDRC). Previously, he was at the University of Exeter as Director of the Institute of Population Studies and of its World Health Organization (WHO) Collaborating Centre in Human Reproduction and Reader in Health Studies. He was also a Non-Executive Director of the Devon Family Health Services Authority. Until 1997, he was Professor of Human Geography at the University of Nottingham and Head of Department, 1996-97, and Director of its WHO Collaborating Centre for Spatial Health Modelling. He has extensive research experience in many countries of Asia and the Asia-Pacific, and also Africa and the Caribbean.

David has held visiting appointments or external examinerships at several universities, including the University of Hong Kong, the National University of Singapore, the University of the West Indies and the University of Ulster. He is an elected member of the Academia Europaea (The Academy of Europe), and a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, and a Corresponding Member of the Royal Academy for Overseas Sciences, Belgium. He has received research support from a wide range of sources. He has been an adviser and resource person for the WHO, the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UN ESCAP) and other UN bodies.

He is currently an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Environment and Geography in Macquarie University, Sydney, Australia and has been a Special Professor in the University of Nottingham and Adjunct Professor in the Department of Health, Aging and Society at McMaster University, Ontario, Canada.
His current undergraduate teaching includes Social Gerontology (SOC203) and Global Health (SOC339). He has contributed to various research methods and postgraduate courses, and has extensive postgraduate supervision experience of masters and doctoral students in Hong Kong and elsewhere.
He is Asian regional advisor to Health and Place and he was until 2006 an advisory editor to Social Science and Medicine. He is currently on the editorial boards of Ageing International and Economía, Sociedad y Territorio and the Asian Journal of Gerontology and Geriatrics. He has published over one hundred papers and many chapters and occasional papers.
