About Dr Philip R. Stone

Dr Philip Stone is founder and Executive Director of the Institute for Dark Tourism Research (iDTR, Est 2012). The iDTR is an internationally recognised centre of excellence for dark tourism scholarship based at the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan), Preston, UK.

Philip is a former Management Consultant and General Manager within the UK visitor economy (as well as a qualified chef). Prior to academia, Philip had extensive commercial experience within the UK private sector, which he now combines with social science perspectives to help deliver higher education at UCLan.

Philip's PhD thesis appraised dark tourism and its fundamental interrelationships with the cultural condition of contemporary society. His Masters thesis critically examined rural landscape ideology within the context of visitor economy management and sustainable development. Philip's Bachelor dissertation evaluated the validity of psychometric testing in human resource management.

Philip, a former tutor at the University of Cambridge (UK) and is a Media Consultant on dark tourism. Clients include BBC TV and radio, CNN, History Television, Der Spiegel, New York Times, Huffington Post, The New Scientist, The Washington Post, The Guardian, and a host of local, national and international press and broadcast media.

Philip has also presented at many international conferences, including delivering over 25 keynote addresses in the UK, USA, Taiwan, Estonia, Poland, Holland, and Germany. Philip has also convened a numerous national and international academic conferences at the University of Central Lancashire.

Philip has published extensively in the area of dark tourism with over 90 research outputs, including books, peer-review journal articles, conference papers, book reviews, and trade and press articles. His books include: The Darker Side of Travel: The Theory and Practice of Dark Tourism (Channel View Publications, 2009), Tourist Experience: Contemporary Perspectives (Routledge, 2011), and The Contemporary Tourist Experience: Concepts & Consequences (Routledge, 2012). His most recent book is The Palgrave Handbook of Dark Tourism Studies (Palgrave Macmillian, 2018).
