About Peter Mark

I am an historian of pre-colonial West Africa, as well as a cultural historian focusing on the art and material culture of the Upper Guinea Coast. My research includes monographs on the Casamance region of southern Senegal and the history of masking traditions in this area. I have written on the history of ethnicity and of identities in Upper Guinea, and have recently co-authored, with José da Silva Horta, "The Forgotten Diaspora, Jewish communities in West Africa and the creation of the Atlantic World" (Cambridge, 2011). I am also interested in the earliest contact between Portugal and sub-Saharan Africa.
