Public opinion on climate change adaptation, 2019-2020: results from a six-wave U.S. national survey

Abstract
This report describes U.S. national public opinion on questions related to climate change adaptation over six surveys conducted every three months from Summer 2019 through Fall 2020. We find that most Americans have heard about climate change adaptation, however fewer support adaptation efforts by local government. Over half of Americans are not concerned about extreme weather in local communities, and less than half think their community members will be harmed by extreme weather in the next five years. About half of the American public are confident that they can prepare themselves for extreme weather, and over one-third doubt that their local government can prepare their community. Over six waves of surveys, the percentage of respondents reporting personal experience with climate-related extreme weather events varies over time.
