Choices of the hand : a survey of work by New Zealand jeweller Peter Deckers

Abstract
A survey of 20 years of artistic creation by Dutch born New Zealand jeweller Peter Deckers which reveals how he delves beneath the apparently simple, neutral or commonplace surface of things to expose what he refers to as “their surprising complexity.” As a result of this process each piece he produces is unique and he never repeats a design. Many jewellers are concerned that they may confuse the observer with complex ideas. They aim to give their pieces an obvious identity around which the observer’s complex feelings of self and identity may form. A jeweller has to be confident to create pieces that are robust and functional, as well as artistic creations which convey complex ideas.
