MSTC 111 Music Theory I
MSTC 111 (2012)
  • Peter G Fielding, Mahidol University, College of Music
Description
This is the initial class of the BM four course core curriculum that surveys the music theory that
can describe most of the music of the Common Practice Period (roughly the 17th-early-20thC.), as
well as the more recent repertoire of the Twentieth and Twenty-First Centuries.
This course will focus on music of the Western tonal, diatonic tradition. After reviewing
fundamental concepts of pitch, rhythm, and its notation, we will explore aspects of melodic
voice-leading and harmonic chord progressions as we analyse and compose music rooted in the
4-part chorale style (Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Bass) in both major and minor keys.
Furthermore, you will learn to realize figured bass notation, analyze and
harmonize music with Roman Numeral symbols, as well as learn to identify and label
cadences and formal structures in music.
