Abstract
The varied strophic art songs of Johannes Brahms (1833-97) serve as a model for variation techniques found within this genre. Through an examination of A and A’ sections of three lied, variation procedures are identified. Typical variation techniques observed in these varied strophic art songs include: the shifting of accompaniment textures and the departure from symmetry of melodic line and phrase structure.
