About Dr. Paulette Marty

Dr. Paulette Marty, a professor of theatre arts, joined Appalachian State University’s Department of Theatre and Dance in 2004 and teaches theatre history, dramatic literature and dramaturgy, as well as cross-disciplinary topics. An award-winning advocate for first-year college students and former director of Appalachian’s General Education Program, Marty has said teaching in the liberal arts classroom is “the most important part of my professional life.”

In addition to creating engaging learning experiences for students on campus, Marty co-leads study abroad programs to Europe to explore historical and contemporary theatre and culturea highlight being the opportunity for students to visit places like Hampton Court Palace where they can stand on the very floor boards where Shakespeare performed. Marty also serves as a production dramaturg and director for campus performances, with recent productions that include “Silence” by Moira Buffini and “Clybourne Park” by Bruce Norris. Her research specialties include contemporary directing, Elizabethan theatre and spectacle, and the performance of folklore. She is currently finishing a book on contemporary women stage directors and has previously published in various periodicals, including American Theatre,Theatre Survey, Theatre Symposium,and Medieval English Theatre.
