Abstract
This research paper looks at the work of independent school in making connections and helping to build communities, sometimes internationally. Almost all independent schools in Victoria have, as an explicit educational aim, the creation of opportunities for students to learn in their communities, with their communities, and to work for their communities. Some of these opportunities exist within the curriculum framework, and others occur within a community service program, but they all have the goal of working with others and, through this, to grow in understanding and to foster a strong sense of civic and community responsibility.
