Abstract

The purpose of this exploratory study was to determine whether or not differences exist in the grade point averages (GPA) of male and female student-athletes at a Division II university in Ohio. The participants were 458 student-athletes (303 males, 155 females). Data were analyzed using the chi-square test of homogeneity, male and female athletes were compared on the basis of whether their cumulative collegiate GPA was above or below the mean GPA for athletes at the institution. The researchers found a statistically significant difference existed between the academic performance of the female and male student-athletes at the institution [χ2(1, N = 456) = 19.84, p ≤ .001]. Female student-athletes had a significantly higher cumulative collegiate GPA than did male student-athletes.
