Abstract
The purpose of the following study was to evaluate the relationship between childhood experiences and narcissistic personality traits of those raised in various childhood environments. Adoptees (N = 75), former foster children (N = 64), and those who neither (N = 211) were assessed on their early maladaptive schemas (EMS), benevolent childhood experiences (BCE), and narcissism. Former foster children had the highest prevalence of EMS compared to those who neither, whom had higher occurrence of BCE. Those from more privileged backgrounds tended to report more narcissistic traits. This link was partially mediated by both EMS and BCE with more positive experiences and lower maladaptive schemas associated with higher levels of narcissism.
