Abstract
Provenance and provenience as applied to archaeological artifacts are terms used in the disciplines of law, art history, anthropology and archaeology, yet their meanings may differ. This article explores the different uses and changing meanings of these terms, the status of artifacts as they travel through time and space, and the effect of these changes on the efficacy of the law in interdicting and disincentivizing the trade in illegally obtained archaeological artifacts.
