Beyond the Walls: Extending the University through Online Digital Photography ExhibitIllinois Library Association Annual Conference (2011)
AbstractIn the Fall 2010, Robert Morris University of Illinois offered a course titled, Creative Expressions: Digital Photography in the Bensenville branch campus. The course introduces students to digital photography both “as an art form and communication tool.” Sixteen students registered for the ten-week course in which the instructor presented topics that encourages “the development of visual, social, and political themes” through digital photography. To extend the goal of the course beyond the walls of the campus, we created an online exhibit through Flickr, a social photo-sharing and networking site. Through this online exhibit, the students were able to share and communicate the outcome of their studies, their art forms, to various communities—families, friends, and many others. Additionally, through collaborative efforts between the faculty, librarian, and staff, we created an extension of the university that would help further academic and social discourse, on-campus and online.
