Abstract
In the wake of the pandemic, consumer debt is one of the biggest issues affecting our country, and low-income consumers will face the brunt of it. There is no doubt that they will face harsh debt collection practices, predatory lending and unfair credit reporting. The National Consumer Law Center and other advocates are calling for legislation and policy barring pandemic-era rental debt from being used as a barrier to housing. But rental debt is just one factor. Across the board, debt collection abuses are on the rise, and consumers are feeling the effects. How can law and policy intervene?
