The plane wave modulational instability of an integrable defocussing coupled nonlinear Schrödinger system, with a trigonal spectral curve, is examined. The problem of classifying trigonal curves of genus one according to theirmonodromy is discussed, revealing the existence of two distinct classes of genus-one solutions of the coupled system.
