Abstract
The engineering curriculum has consistently recognized experiential learning as special projects, field trips, internships, and similar activities. In recent years, study abroad programs have gained popularity. They are considered another experiential learning method, incorporating the real-life application of course materials with directed and reflective engagement with the host culture. This has led to greater intellectual learning in the topics covered while abroad, promotes personal growth, and heightens intercultural awareness. This paper presents an approach to preparing students for the Global Engineering workforce through an International Engineering Field Experience by combining technical and non-technical skills. In contrast to the study abroad program, traditional internships, and co-op programs, we offer a full-fledged academic course that combines in-class activities and on-site project implementation in a foreign country. The field experience component’s specific activities and outcomes are directly mapped into the course learning outcomes and are defined before commencing the fieldwork. The instructors continuously monitor the student’s work, and progress reports are submitted periodically. This approach has resulted in a measurable increase in students’ engagement and better attainment of the program-wide learning outcomes than other methods. This experience mimics the real-life experience of an engineer who is called upon to travel overseas on short notice. It also describes the benefit of applying appropriate technology and working effectively in other cultures.
