An Economic Analysis of Legal Harmonization: The Case of Law Enforcement within the European Union
Research Handbook on the Economics of European Union Law (2012)

Abstract
This paper reviews the economic literature of legal harmonization and proposes an application to law enforcement in the context of the Schengen Area. Legal economists are skeptical about the net benefits of coordination and reduction of transaction costs. There are good economic arguments against law enforcement harmonization. These questions are unlikely to be solved without empirical analysis.
