About Norman Friesen

Before coming to Boise State University in 2013, Dr. Norm Friesen was the Canada Research Chair in E-Learning Practices at Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops, British Columbia. He is the author of several editions of books on the effective use of instructional software and on the implementation of technical standards for online collections of educational resources, and is a founding co-editor of Phenomenology & Practice (www.phandpr.org), an open access, peer-reviewed journal. His academic credentials include an Masters in German from Johns Hopkins University, and a Masters in Library and Information Studies and Ph.D. in Education from the University of Alberta. A prolific writer and presenter, Dr. Friesen's interests include the history of the use of traditional and technical media in education; theories of learning and their history; philosophy and critical theory of technology, media and education; qualitative research methods; Web 2.0 and social media in education; information systems for instruction and data management, and their interoperability; and open educational resources, open technology and policy.
