Airplane Flight Envelopes

Abstract
Operational flight envelopes define limits of altitudes and airspeeds in which a FAR 23 or 25 airplane operate safely. The issues associated with flight envelopes are flight loads, structural integrity, stability, control, and performance. Maneuvering (v-n), gust (v-g), and combined flight load envelopes will be discussed for FAA certified airplanes. Flight (limit) and ultimate loads define operational and ultimate envelopes. Phenomena such as low- and high-speed buffet, coffin-corner, flutter, buffeting, vibrations, divergence, control reversal, etc., will be discussed. FAR 25 airplanes flying at high altitudes and high Mach numbers experience dramatic changes in aerodynamic behavior often requiring stability augmentation and envelope protection systems.
