Abstract
This presentation addresses the topic of tube feeding in nursing home residents. This presentation begins with examining incidence/prevalence of tube feeding in long term care settings and discussing widespread myths about the pros and cons of tube feeding. Then presented is data recently collected in an investigation on characteristics of tube-fed patients in nursing homes and longitudinal outcomes and routine practice with these tube-fed patients. Finally, we focus on using evidence to challenge current practices and present information about the development of and preliminary efficacy of an interdisciplinary tube-feeding re-assessment protocol in a nursing home setting.
