Research Program Overview
Dr. Naveen Poonai is an Associate Professor in the Departments of Paediatrics, Epidemiology & Biostatistics, and Internal Medicine. His research program has been operating for almost 10 years and focuses on clinical trials to find the optimal therapeutic approaches to managing pain and distress for children presenting to hospital with painful conditions or undergoing a painful procedure. These include hyoscine butylbromide for functional abdominal pain, oral morphine for musculoskeletal injuries and post-operative pain, intranasal dexmedetomidine for laceration repair, intranasal Ketodex for fracture reduction, point-of-care ultrasound for diagnosis of forearm fractures, a recovery guidance app for ankle injuries, and virtual reality distraction during port-a-cath access. Most recently, he leads the Predictors of Chronic Pain in Children (PRECIPICE) project, a 20-year longitudinal cohort study that brings together investigators from neuroscience, paediatrics, anesthesia, psychology, and physical therapy. His knowledge translation activities involve partner organizations including Children’s Healthcare Canada, Translating Emergency Knowledge for Kids (TREKK), the Sickkids Online Paediatric Pain Curriculum, the Skeptics Guide to Emergency Medicine, and EMRap. His most notably quality improvement work includes The Comfort Promise, a hospital-wide quality improvement initiative to reduce needle-related distress in children.
