Abstract
Placental migration can be passive (physiological) and active (pathological). The former is observed per the growth of uterus in pregnancy (catching the ride). The latter is a severe complication where the placenta actively responds to changes in the uterine environment. Transvaginal sonography in a cohort of 132 women with simpleton pregnancies and uterine fibroids was performed. "Active placental migration" was observed in 15 (11.36%) cases and empirically was defined by the following parameters: distance between the internal cervical os and the lower placental margin was > 2 cm, the lower edge of placenta had migrated for more than 10 cm within two weeks of gestation. In 13 (9.84%) cases, active migration was observed at the 29th to 34th weeks of pregnancy. After adjusting for the patients' age, gestation age, size of fibroids, polyhydramion, oligohydramnion, and placenta previa, placental active migration was verified in women with subserous or intramural fibroids.
