Abstract
Alpha fetoprotein (αFP) tests were performed in a cross-section (16th - 20th gestation weeks) of 27 singleton pregnancies in women with uterine fibroids. The group average of αFP was nearly 40 -fold higher (402 ng/mL, at the 2nd SD of the mean) than that in the control group of similar gestation age (11.5 ng/mL, at the 2nd SD of the mean). After adjusting for women's age and obstetric history (miscarriages, stillbirth, birth defects), the clinical group showed susbtantial Pearson associations (0.789) between the mean diameter of subserous myomata and αFP levels. The limitations of this study (including the sample size and design) inform the need for further facilitation of research into αFP and pregnancies with uterine myomata.
