Abstract
Purpose: To assess the use of Open Archive Initiative-Protocol for Metadata Harvesting at Global Level. Design/Methodology/Approach: The study was carried out by analyzing the number of OAI-PMH Complaint Repositories listed in Directory of Open Access Repositories-OpenDOAR during 2009 and 2010. Findings: The study highlights the growth in the use of OAI-PMH complaint repositories at global level with the number almost increasing three times during the two years of study. Awareness needs to be imparted among developing nations about the benefits of utilizing harvesting capabilities of the Protocol. Joining of new countries and continents provides an ample justification for its distinction among varied protocols to be utilized for resource sharing in knowledge Society. Research Limitations: The study covers the OAI-PMH Complaint repositories available through OpenDOAR only up to October 2010. Practical Implications: The study will provide an opportunity to repository managers and administers to understand the astounding growing trends in the use of OAI-PMH at global level, thereby motivating them to comprehend the benefits of making their resources harvestable by exploring the capabilities and competencies of OAI-PMH. Originality/Value: The Paper is an original piece of work carried by the researcher to Study use of OAI-PMH.
