Abstract
This chapter explores the issue of domestic violence in Mauritania and its impact on the broader issues of gender-based violence and human rights. We will first examine Mauritania’s legislative framework to understand contemporary policies and practices in family law. The chapter will devote special attention to domestic violence with a contextualized discussion on laws that pertain to a bride’s legal age and consent of marriage, the equality of spouses, forced feedings, female genital mutilation, and polygamous marriages to comprehend society’s perceptions of gender-based violence. The paper will then focus on how politicians, law enforcement agencies, the legal system, and non-governmental organizations should respond to Mauritania’s domestic violence concerns. Through this examination, the paper will conclude with the impact of climate change and the global COVID pandemic on domestic violence and present the initiatives that can positively reform Mauritania’s human rights.
