About Muhammad Abdul-Mageed

Dr. Abdul-Mageed is a Visiting Associate Professor of Natural Language Processing and Machine Learning Department at the Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI).

Biography

Dr. Abdul-Mageed has an associate professorship and a Canada research chair in natural language processing (NLP) and machine learning at the University of British Columbia (UBC). He also founded the UBC Center for Artificial Intelligence.

Abdul-Mageed’s research program focuses on deep representation learning and natural language socio-pragmatics, with a goal to innovate more equitable, efficient, and `social’ machines for improved human health, safer social networking, and reduced information overload. He also has a special focus on Arabic NLP. Specifically, the program focuses on deep representation learning and natural language socio-pragmatics. Additionally, he specializes in Arabic NLP. Currently, Abdul-Mageed's work is applied to a broad spectrum of speech and language creation and understanding applications. His group, for instance, studies computational socio-pragmatics in social media, machine translation, automatic speech recognition, and language models.

Prior to joining UBC and MBZUAI, Dr. Abdul-Mageed worked as a research scientist at an undisclosed startup, as a visiting scholar at the University of Pennsylvania from 2016 to 2018, as a visiting assistant professor at Indiana University's School of Informatics and Computing from 2015 to 2016, and as a visiting scholar at Columbia University's Center for Computational Learning Systems from 2010 to 2012. The Canadian Foundation for Innovation, Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD), Amazon, Google, and Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada have all provided funding for his work. Dr. Abdul-Mageed possesses three US patents.
