To stop partition?: arguments for the Parliament of Southern Ireland, 1921
History Ireland (2021)
  • M C Rast
Abstract
The Parliament of Southern Ireland, designed to open in tandem with the Parliament of Northern Ireland in 1921, is often dismissed as a mere pretense, a formality designed as an excuse for the British government's partition scheme. However, this article shows that British officials thought the legislature would function as intended. Moreover, some Irish people supported the Parliament of Southern Ireland as a means to mitigate - or even put an early end - to partition on the island of Ireland.
